Death Registration

Registering a death is an important legal requirement and typically involves several steps.

In Scotland, the registration of a death is a formal process governed by the National Records of Scotland (NRS).  Below are some of the key steps to register a death in Scotland.

  • If a death occurs in a hospital, a doctor will issue a Medical Certificate of cause of Death (Form 11).  If the death occurs at home or under unusual circumstances you may need to contact a doctor or the police, who may involve a procurator fiscal.

  • Once the doctor issues the Form 11, you will be emailed a copy or can collect in person from the hospital or GP.  the hospital or GP will send the Form 11 via email to the appropriate registrar's office.

  • You must register the death within 8 days (but no more than 21 days) of the date of death.  The registrar will  contact the NOK to complete the registration over the telephone.

When registering a death, you will need to provide certain information.

  • The date and place of death

  • Your loved one's full name, date and place of birth, and their most recent address

  • Their occupation

  • The full name and address of the next of kin/applicant

The registrar will issue a Form 14 required by the funeral director for burial or cremation.  An abbreviated Death Certificate is issued free of charge, if you require a full Death Certificate there is a charge of £10 per copy.

When Your Loved One Dies

Death at Home

When a loved one passes away at home, it can be a difficult and emotional time for everyone. From your first contact to us we will gently guide you on the next steps to take.

A medical professional must come to verify the death before you can contact a funeral director to bring your loved one into their care.

if the death was not expected you must call emergency services on 999.the

Death in a Hospital, Care Home or Hospice

The doctor will issue the medical certificate of cause of death, which is needed to register the death.  The funeral director can then arrange with the hospital, care home or hospice to bring your loved one into our care.  This can be arranged directly you do not need to be there on that day.

If the death was not expected the hospital might need to do a post-mortem examination to find out the cause of death.
